OFC Qualifying

26th November 2021 Update:

The qualification process for the Oceania region of the world is going to be opened up in three days time as the preliminary is drawn which will see the OFC nations compete for places for the inter-confederation play offs.

18th March 2022

On the 17th of March, there was one game that was played out, and it was a two nil win for the Solomon Islands against the Cook Islands.

Tahiti’s match against Vanuatu had been cancelled because of Covid cases in the latter’s camp.

On the 18th March, two matches were played. New Zealand often qualify for World Cups in previous attempts, and their 1-0 victory against the fellow island nation of Papa New Guinea will only help their attempt to continue qualifying for the World Cup this year.

Fiji picked up a 2-1 win over minnows, New Caledonia.

24th March 2022

Three games were played out earlier today in the Oceania qualifying.

Oceania Qualification – The Solomon Islands beat Tahiti 3-1 in the warm climes of Doha in Qatar. As events have progressed, Vanuatu and the Cook Islands both have withdrawn from qualifying (because of a Covid outbreak) so this means that both, Solomon Islands and Tahiti get byes into the next round.

In the other group, New Zealand avoided a banana skin by thrashing the minnows of New Caledonia, 7-1. New Zealand beat Fiji 4-0 in their previous qualifier.

Papua New Guinea edged past Fiji 2-1.

In the final stage of OFC qualifying, New Zealand play Tahiti whereas, the Solomon Islands will face off against Papua New Guinea.

The winner of each tie will play a final to determine OFC’s entrant in the inter-confederation play offs.

On the 27th March, two semi finals took place.

Solomon Islands claimed a 3-2 win against Papua New Guinea whereas New Zealand just edged Tahiti 1-0.

This sets us up for a Solomon Islands and New Zealand final on the 30th March 2022. Where the win shall occupy the OFC berth in the intercontinental play offs.

The winner of the final will face the fourth placed third round team from the North American qualifying, who currently is Costa Rica. (USA and Mexico are the other two teams that could end up facing the winner of the SOL/NZ clash).
